Gen Tumwine died of lung cancer - Museveni

With deep sorrow, I announce the death of General Tumwine, which occurred at 5:46am on Thursday morning in Nairobi, from lung cancer,” read President Yoweri Museveni’s statement.

Museveni said Tumwine was a hardworking cadre.

UPDF | GEN TUMWINE | DEATH 

KAMPALA - “Countrymen and Countrywomen, especially the National Resistance Movement /National Resistance Army (NRA)/Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) fraternity. 

With deep sorrow, I announce the death of General Tumwine, which occurred at 5:46am on Thursday morning in Nairobi, from lung cancer,” read President Yoweri Museveni’s statement about the death of former security minister Gen. Elly Tumwine. 

Tumwine succumbed to lung cancer at the age of 68. Museveni said Tumwine was a hardworking cadre. 

“I had taught him at Burunga Primary School in 1967, after our A’levels, as a student teacher, before going to university later that year.

He joined FRONASA with 9,000 others in 1979, went to Monduli Military School in Tanzania and was the one who fired the first shot on the February 6th 1981 at Kabamba, at the beginning of the 1981-1986 war of Resistance.”

Tumwine was flown to Aga Khan Hospital, Nairobi early this month after his condition deteriorated at Nakasero Hospital in Kampala. 

The armed forces, in a joint statement with the UPDF fraternity, described Tumwine as a dedicated and hardworking cadre. 

“We will always remember his patriotic contribution to the revolution.”
