The former Prime Minister, Amama Mbabazi, has paid tribute to Gen. Elly Tumwine, noting that the National Resistance Army/ Movement (NRA/M) soldier devoted his entire life to the revolutionary struggle.

“I am greatly saddened by the passing of Gen. Elly Tumwine. I send my family’s deepest condolences to his family at this difficult time. We mourn with you and celebrate the life of Gen. Tumwine who devoted his life to the struggle for peace, freedom, democracy and prosperity,” Mbabazi said.

According to President Yoweri Museveni, the former security minister succumbed to lung cancer on August 25 at the Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya. He was 68.

“With deep sorrow, I announce the death of General Elly Tumwine which occurred at 5:46am this morning in Nairobi, from lung cancer,” Museveni said on Thursday, describing Tumwine as “a dedicated and hard-working cadre.”

In his condolence message, the Security Minister, Maj. Gen. Jim Muhwezi, described Tumwine as “a disciplinarian” who espoused values in his work.

“Gen. Elly Tumwine spoke the truth even where the truth hurts. He was a disciplinarian whose values were never compromised. May God comfort his family and friends in this trying moment,” he said.
