Weightlifter Kivumbi qualifies for Commonwealth Games

Experienced weightlifter Mubarak Kivumbi has hit the mark as one of the qualifiers for the 2022 Commonwealth Games due to start on July 28 in Birmingham.

Kivumbi has been a playing coach and his performance in the world championships in Uzbekistan in 2020 and the Africa Gold Olympic Qualifiers in Nairobi have been vital in pushing for his points at the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) selection committee to announce him as a qualifier.

“I am happy to have qualified. The combination of game love, spirit, solidarity and consistency have not only paid me back but, the whole country as I am now the third official qualifier for the Commonwealth Games.

“I shall apply the knowledge, experience and skill to improve on my performances to be on the podium in Birmingham,” noted Kivumbi at his training station at Physique Gym in Kasubi.

Kivumbi competes in the 61kg category and is currently ranked 5th in Africa.

 

He has competed at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, All Africa Games in Algeria and the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

He is a UK certified coach and has handled the national team since 2014 with others.

Kivumbi now joins Davis Niyoyita and Godfrey Baligeya on the national weightlifting team to Birmingham.
