The Vice President, Jessica Alupo, has led the Ugandan delegation to Equatorial-Guinea for the second African Union extra-ordinary summit on terrorism and unconstitutional changes of Government.

Other Government dignitaries include the State Minister for Foreign Affairs, John Mulimba, and all Ugandan envoys to African states.

Mulimba attended the council of ministers at the summit on Wednesday ahead of the Heads-of-State and Government summit on Thursday.

“The Vice President arrives today [Wednesday] to lead the delegation at the Heads of State and Government summit,” the Ugandan envoy to Ethiopia, Rebecca Amuge Otengo, who is in Malabo for the summit, said.

The summit, which starts today (May 25), will end on May 28.

“The commencement of the summit will coincide with Africa Day, which is observed annually to commemorate the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) which was created on May 25, 1963. It is the precursor of the African Union (AU),” a statement issued by AU Commission chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat, noted.

“The Extraordinary Summit comes on the back of five coups in Africa since 2021, with cases of terror attacks in various regions and countries including the Sahel, Somalia, Angola and the Central African Republic, among others,” the statement noted.

Vice President Alupo is also expected to hold bilateral talks with Equatorial Guinea President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, who is the host of the summit.

In March this year, the AU leaders held a Reflection Forum on Unconstitutional Changes of Government in Africa, in Accra, Ghana, focusing on finding solutions to address the resurgence of unconstitutional changes of government in Africa, especially in Burkina Faso, Chad, Guinea, Sudan and Mali.
