January 19, 2021: Church suspends Stanley Ntagali.

The Church of Uganda (COU) confirmed that the Archbishop, Dr. Stephen Kaziimba, had suspended his predecessor Stanley Ntagali from performing priestly duties. According to church authorities, Kaziimba suspended Ntagali for allegedly being involved in an extramarital affair with a married woman. 

January 29, 2021: Kabushenga takes early retirement.

Robert Kabushenga, the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Vision Group, resigned after 14 years at the helm of the country’s biggest media group.

February 04, 2021: Dominic Ongwen convicted of war crimes.

Dominic Ongwen became the first Ugandan to be tried and convicted by The Hague-based International Criminal Court. The ICC delivered its long-awaited judgment in the case, in a televised session that was closely watched in Gulu, Uganda, his home area where he perpetrated most of the atrocities.

February 07, 2021: Kyabazinga launches project of fitness for the elderly.

In a bid to prevent diseases that usually affect the elderly, Gabula Royal Foundation (GRF) launched the Ebisaizi project, a mental health and wellness project in Butembe chiefdom.

February 13, 2021: Kadaga explains Oulanyah fallout.

Kadaga keeps Oulanyah on katebe for one year. Deputy Speaker had not chaired House  for one year.

March 01, 2021: USPC STARTS ISSUING DRIVING LICENCES

Established in October 2018, USPC is a joint venture between the Uganda government firm — Uganda Printing and Publishing Corporation (UPPC) and German firm Veridos GmbH. The company took over the printing and issuance of driving licences from Face Technologies, a South African company that had been operating for the last 17 years. NV020321pg01&10.

March 06, 2021: CITY GANGS: CITY ROBBERIES: SH2B STOLEN IN A WEEK, 9 SUSPECTS HELD.

At least sh2b was stolen in four different planned heists in Kampala in one week by robbers moving on bodabodas. The racket was busted by the criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) detectives, led by Assistant Inspector General of Police Grace Akullo, in an operation that lasted 10 days.

March 05, 2021: KENYA BANS UGANDA MAIZE.

Uganda’s maize sector was dealt a big blow after Kenya imposed a ban on importation of maize from neighbouring countries.

March 05, 2021: COVID VACCINE: FIRST BATCH ARRIVES.

Uganda received the first batch of COVID-19 vaccines, marking a historic step towards the goal of equitable distribution globally. The 864,000 doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine were shipped under the COVAX Facility, the world’s channel for universal access to COVID-19 vaccines.

March 07, 2021: BARYAMUREEBA CLAIMS OWNERSHIP OF MP NABILAH’S MARITAL HOME.

Prof. Venansius Baryamureeba, claimed acquisition of the marital home of Kampala Woman Member of Parliament Nabilah Naggayi and husband Isaac Sempala, over a debt of sh850m. Baryamureeba revealed that he had since instructed his lawyer to attach the house and evict the couple after they allegedly failed to honour their debt obligation.

March 07, 2021: Kenya sends back 150 trucks of maize to Uganda, traders count losses. Thousands of tonnes of Ugandan maize sold to Kenya was brought back to Busia produce market. This was after Kenya erected impromptu roadblocks and impounded several trucks carrying the maize, in contravention of the ban issued.

March 10, 2021: COVID-19: Ministers, envoys take the jab as vaccination starts.

In full glare of cameras, the Minister of Health Jane Ruth Aceng, became the first recipient of the AstraZeneca vaccine, marking the start of countrywide vaccination against the pandemic.

March 15, 2021: Traffic police get new uniform.

Police phased out white Traffic Police uniform after 13 years of wearing white as their official uniform, the Uganda Police Force (UPF) Council replaced it with the old regular khaki uniform, with special additions to it. The institution’s Chief Political Commissar, Assistant Deputy Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Asan Kasingye, unveiled the new uniform.

March 17, 2021: Magufuli Death. Regional and international leaders paid tribute to the President of Tanzania, Dr John Pombe Magufuli, who succumbed to heart failure. President Yoweri Museveni ordered the national flags to fly at half-mast until the burial.

March 19, 2021: NEW VISION ROOTS FOR INNOVATION AS COMPANY MARKS 35 YEARS.

An array of innovations topped the list of the key milestones that Vision Group has achieved over the last 35 years to maintain its position as Uganda’s leading media house.

March 20, 2021: Kasaija petitions Museveni to reject NSSF mid-term access. Finance minister Matia Kasaija petitioned President Yoweri Museveni to reject the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) Bill, which allowed workers aged 45 and above to have mid-term access to their savings.

March 25, 2021: PRESIDENT MUSEVENI CALLS FOR LOCAL PROCUREMENT OF GOVT MOTORCYCLES.

President Yoweri Museveni ordered government departments to procure motorcycles from local companies, saying the move was intended to boost local industries.

March 26, 2021: I saved Age limit Bill— Oulanyah. The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Oulanyah, denied accusations by his boss, Rebecca Kadaga, that he ran away from the debate on the Constitutional (Amendment) Bill that scrapped the presidential age limit in 2017.

March 27, 2021: MUSEVENI, FIRST LADY RECEIVE COVID JAB.

President Yoweri Museveni and First Lady Janet Museveni were vaccinated against COVID-19 at State House Nakasero. 

April 01, 2021: Why supreme Mufti Ndirangwa quit. Supreme Mufti Sheikh Siliman Kasule Ndirangwa resigned unexpectedly, saying he did not want to get involved in a tug-of-war with his superiors.

April 03, 2021: AMERICAN PAYS SH210M BRIDE PRICE FOR KARIMOJONG GIRL. An American businessman based in Uganda paid sh210m as bride price for his Karimojong wife, in a dramatic traditional marriage ceremony that lasted five days. This was held in Napak district. The sh210m was an equivalent of 200 bulls or 300 cows and 100 goats as per the negotiating team.

April 05, 2021: AKON PLEDGES TO PROMOTE UGANDA’S IMAGE.

US music icon Akon vowed to promote Uganda and help dispel the misinformation about the country. Akon said while Uganda is a country of immense beauty and economic potential, much of this wealth was not known to the outside world because what is told about the country was only its dark past.

April 08, 2021: Archbishop Lwanga laid to rest. Archbishop Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga was laid to rest on the eve of his 43rd anniversary of his ordination as a Catholic priest. Lwanga was buried inside the Sacred Heart Cathedral, Rubaga, the same place where he was ordained a priest.

April 08, 2021: BISHOP SSEMOGERERE APPOINTED APOSTOLIC ADMINISTRATOR OF KAMPALA ARCHDIOCESE.

Bishop Paul Ssemogerere of Kasana-Luwero Diocese was appointed Apostolic Administrator of Kampala Archdiocese. The appointment followed the death of Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga. The announcement was made by the Papal Nuncio, Archbishop Luigi Bianco, during the funeral Mass at Rubaga Cathedral.

April 13, 2021: Vision Group gets new Chief. Don Wanyama, the Senior Press Secretary to President Yoweri Museveni, was appointed as the Vision Group new Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer. Wanyama replaced Robert Kabushenga, who had been at the helm of the company for 15 years. NV140421pg01&08.

April 16, 2021: KABAKA, NNABAGEREKA GET COVID-19 JABS.

Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi and his wife, Sylvia Nagginda, vaccinated against COVID-19 at Kireka Palace in Wakiso district. The Kabaka and wife joined a number of Ugandan dignitaries who had taken the COVID-19 jab.

April 18, 2021: OVER SH2B LOST IN FOREIGN JOB SCAM, WOMAN ARRESTED.

A woman who had been in hiding after fleecing more than 100 people of their money, amounting to sh2b, in a job scam was arrested. Daphine Natamba, alias Nelias, 26, a resident of Buddo, Nakasozi, was arrested at Kimaanya in Masaka city, where she had been hiding. Police launched a hunt for her after receiving several complaints from the members of the public who had been conned of their money.

April 20, 2021: JAPAN DONATES 36B FOR REFUGEES.

The Government of Japan committed another $9.8m (about sh36b) to Uganda towards supporting different refugee-response activities in various settlements and host communities.

April 22, 2021: PLEASE FORGIVE ME, SAYS NTAGALI. NTAGALI APOLOGISES OVER ADULTERY.

There was a haunting moment of silence at the St Paul’s Cathedral Namirembe, as the former Church of Uganda Archbishop, Stanley Ntagali, publicly confessed how he committed adultery and sought forgiveness.

April 24, 2021: CHURCH HOUSE COULD BE AUCTIONED.

The Church of Uganda held crisis talks after it emerged that its multi-billion Church House building on Kampala Road was at risk of being auctioned over sh48b unpaid debt.

April 27, 2021: Former Archbishop Ntagali asked to pay over sh500m in damages over adultery. As the former archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Stanley Ntagali, continued to walk the atonement journey to what he described as a “solid rock” of forgiveness, new demands were tabled for the man of God to fulfil. According to the Rev. Christopher Tugumehabwe, the husband of Tukamuhabwa Judith, the lady at the centre of the adultery scandal, Ntangali was asked as a must to pay sh530m damages for eloping with a married woman.   

May 12, 2021: Pomp, grandeur as president Museveni swears in.

Shortly after he was sworn in to start a new five-year term of office at Kololo Independence Grounds, President Yoweri Museveni had a word of advice to those who may still be locked in the campaign euphoria: “Elections are over; it is time to get back to work.”

May 20, 2021: Final key oil Pipeline agreement signed.

President Samia Suluhu of Tanzania and her Ugandan counterpart, Yoweri Museveni, signed a key agreement of the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) project at State House Dar-es-Salaam.

May 23, 2021: NRM PICKS OULANYAH, KADAGA GOES INDEPENDENT.

It took two days for the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) top organ to decide that the former Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Oulanyah, would hold the party ticket in the speakership race, a move that triggered the outgoing Speaker, Rebecca Kadaga, to contest as an independent.

May 24, 2021: Kadaga walks out as Oulanyah is sworn in as new Speaker.

She came in first and left first. The Kamuli district Woman MP, Rebecca Kadaga, could not sit back to witness the swearing-in ceremony of her rival, Jacob Oulanyah, after she lost her bid for Speaker of the 11th Parliament.

May 27, 2021: UGANDA, DR CONGO SIGN ROAD DEAL.

Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo signed major commitments that would see the two countries bolster cross-border trade, development and stabilize eastern Congo that had pockets of instability. The signing ceremony was a follow-up to the meeting between President Yoweri Museveni and his DR Congo counterpart, Felix Tshisekedi, during his visit to Uganda.

June 01, 2021: HOW GEN. KATUMBA SURVIVED ASSASSINS.

Former works and transport minister Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala was shot and injured during an attack by armed assailants on motorcycles, which left his daughter and driver dead.

June 06, 2021: Schools, churches closed for 42 days. As the country grappled with a second COVID-19 life-threatening wave, President Yoweri Museveni instituted new measures to curb the spread of the virus, including the closure of schools and churches for 42 days.

June 08, 2021: WOMEN EAT BIG IN NEW CABINET. ALUPO, NABBANJA SCOOP TOP POSITIONS.

President Yoweri Museveni released his new cabinet, appointing Katawi Woman MP Jessica Alupo as the Vice-President and Kakumiro Woman MP Robinah Nabbanja, as the Prime Minister.

June 16, 2021: UGANDA, CONGO LAUNCH $330M ROAD PROJECT.

President Yoweri Museveni and his Congolese counterpart Felix-Antoine Tshisekedi commissioned the construction of 223km of roads in DR Congo. Ceremony was held at Mpondwe in Kasese district in Uganda.

June 20, 2021: COVID-19: GOVERNMENT TO GIVE OUT CASH HANDOUTS TO VULNERABLE UGANDANS.

Following an emergency meeting involving ministers, technocrats and other members of the National Taskforce on COVID-19, it was resolved that the Government would give out cash handouts to vulnerable Ugandans in urban areas to enable them buy food during the 42-day lockdown period.

June 23, 2021: SSEKANDI HANDS OVER TO ALUPO.

Former Vice-President (VP) Edward Ssekandi handed over office and the East African flag to the incoming VP, Maj. (Rtd) Jessica Alupo. This was at the Office of the Prime Minister.

June 24, 2021: MBADI NEW CDF, ELWELU DEPUTY, AS KAINERUGABA TAKES OVERLAND FORCES.

President Yoweri Museveni, the Commander-in-Chief (CIC) of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces, promoted Lt. Gen. Wilson Mbadi to the rank of General and appointed him the new Chief of Defence Forces (CDF). Gen. Mbadi replaced Gen. David Muhoozi, who was appointed state minister for internal affairs. Museveni also made several other appointments.

June 26, 2021: KATUMBA ATTACK: THUGS STEAL SPY CAMERA SYSTEM.

The criminal masterminds of the attack on works minister Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala broke into a school and stole servers that contained footage of the assassins, 11 hours after the attack.

June 29, 2021: COVIDEX CLEARED FOR TREATMENT.

The National Drug Authority (NDA) has cleared the use of covidex, a local herbal medicine, in the treatment of viral infections, including COVID-19.

July 01, 2021: ROW OVER COVIDEX OWNERSHIP ERUPTS.

A row erupted over the ownership of the Covidex herbal medicine, with Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) claiming it was leaked to the market before going through all the required procedures.

July 08, 2021: Nabbanja relief cash distribution starts. “This is the Prime Minister of Uganda, have you received the money?” Robinah Nabbanja asked Geoffrey Oloya, one of the first recipients of the COVID-19 relief money.

July 15, 2021: RESHUFFLE. President Museveni shuffled Permanent Secretaries, named new IGG, human rights head in a shake-up of public service and technocrats across Government.

July 19, 2021: Govt confirms 800 people received fake COVID-19 vaccine. Over 800 people belonging mainly to 22 corporate companies were given a fake COVID-19 vaccine, the Government confirmed.

July 21, 2021: PROF. OGWANG GETS LAND FOR FACTORY.

Dr Patrick Ogwang, the scientist behind Covidex, a popular supportive treatment drug for COVID-19, received an investment licence and five acres of land from Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) to set up a Covidex factory.

August 03, 2021: Museveni hosts Kabaka Mutebi. Buganda Kingdom and the Government continued their decades-old dialogue practice when Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II visited President Yoweri Museveni at the State Lodge in Nakasero to deliberate on “matters of mutual interest.”

August 09, 2021: BLOGGER LUMBUYE FACES TERRORISM CHARGES.

A total of 15 charges were slapped on Turkish-based Ugandan blogger, Fred Kajjubi Lumbuye. The charges ranged from inciting violence, courtesy of spreading harmful information/propaganda among others.

August 10, 2021: HUNDREDS LINE STREETS TO WELCOME HOME OLYMPIC STARS.

Little children leaped for joy, elderly women waved with approval. Cars honked, boda bodas bleeped. Uganda’s Olympic heroes were back and their glory covered the Entebbe-Kampala highway in sweet euphoria. It paralyzed business, stopped movement.

August 14, 2021: MUSEVENI WARNS SECURITY ON TORTURE.

Museveni warned security against human rights abuse. President Yoweri Museveni warned security operatives against the torture of suspects, noting that the vice would not be tolerated.

August 23, 2021: Shoprite confirms exit from Uganda, Madagascar. The Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA) called for the smooth exit of South African retail giant, Shoprite, who announced that they were discontinuing their operations in Uganda. NV240821pg03

August 25, 2021: UGANDA TO BENEFIT FROM HOSTING AFGHANS.

Uganda received Afghan evacuees. The evacuees, numbering 51, were received at Entebbe Airport by government officials after arriving aboard a privately chartered plane.

August 27, 2021: NEW VISION EDITOR JOHN KAKANDE BOWS OUT AFTER TWENTY-SEVEN YEARS.

After 27 years in the New Vision newsroom, Kakande was stepping out for a new challenge at life, leaving behind a trail of tributes for his accomplishments. The Vision Group chief executive officer, Don Wanyama, delivered the news of Kakande’s departure during a staff meeting, leaving many stunned.

August 30, 2021: WHO IS BEHIND THE MASAKA KILLINGS?

Iron bar hitmen continued to terrorise communities in greater Masaka region, where they gruesomely murdered over 25 residents and left many injured in less than two months.

August 31, 2021: MUSEVENI SPEAKS OUT ON MASAKA MURDERS.

President Yoweri Museveni described perpetrators of the wave of murders within the greater Masaka region as “pigs” and “bankrupt criminals” whose acts were based on a miscalculation that they could destabilise the country.

September 02, 2021: VICTORIA UNIVERSITY VC ARRESTED.

The army arrested Dr. Lawrence Muganga, the man at the center of re-branding the Banyarwanda tribe in Uganda to become the Abavandimwe tribe. “He was arrested by joint security forces in connection with espionage and illegal stay in the country.

September 03, 2021: MUFTI MUBAJJE SIGNS DEAL WITH RIVAL SHEIKHS.

The Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje, signed an agreement with a group of rival Muslim clerics, led by Sheikh Obed Kamulegeya, pledging to work together to promote Muslim unity. They signed the agreement at Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) headquarters in Old Kampala.

September 07, 2021: MPS SSEGIRINYA, SSEWANYANA CHARGED WITH MURDER.

The Masaka Chief Magistrates’ Court remanded to Kitalya Prison two Members of Parliament after charging them with murder of three people. Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya and Allan Ssewanyana of Makindye West were also charged with attempt to murder a fourth person in Masaka City.

September 09, 2021: Body of tycoon’s wife found in his septic tank. The Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) detectives arrested a city businessman over the murder of his wife, following close to nine months of intensive investigations.

September 10, 2021: VISION GROUP LAUNCHES HARVEST MONEY WEBSITE. The website creates a one-stop centre for information on farming. Harvest Money website was launched by the agriculture minister, Frank Tumwebaze at Vision Group headquarters in Kampala.

September 14, 2021: MUSEVENI ASSENTS TO COFFEE BILL.

The controversial National Coffee Bill, which was drafted in 2018 to streamline the operations of the coffee sector in the country, was finally signed into law.

September 15, 2021: URA MARKS 30 YEARS SINCE BIRTH.

September 16, 2021: MID-TERM ACCESS: NSSF BILL HITS SNAG AGAIN.

Savers to wait longer for money from entity.

September 21, 2021: Businessman Onebe charged, remanded over wife’s murder.

A city businessman was charged and remanded to Kitalya Government Prison over the murder of his wife, Mary Immaculate Aiso Onebe. The wife’s remains were found dumped in a septic tank at the family home in Munyonyo, Kampala.

September 22, 2021: SMART CITY: VISION GROUP, KCCA SIGN PACT.

Media conglomerate Vision Group and KCCA signed a year-long partnership to foster communication and awareness of developments and opportunities within Kampala.

September 27, 2021: MUSEVENI OPPOSES LIFE SENTENCE FOR MURDERERS. President Yoweri Museveni has vowed to use both political and constitutional means to settle the controversy over courts granting bail to suspects facing capital offences.

September 29, 2021: WHAT 12.15% NSSF INTEREST RATE MEANS TO SAVERS. Finance Minister Matia Kasaija declared that the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) would pay 12.15% interest on members’ savings for the financial year ended 2020/21.

October 01, 2021: NO BOND FOR CAPITAL OFFENDERS — MUSEVENI.

In his national address, largely meant to reassure the country on security, President Museveni said he would not allow Police bond for capital offenders.

October 03, 2021: UGANDA SIGNS MEGA TRADE DEALS AT DUBAI EXPO. Uganda began signing major investment deals with foreign companies at the World Expo trade convention in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE).

October 04, 2021: MUSEVENI GIVES UGANDANS IN DUBAI SH500M.

President Yoweri Museveni donated $150,000 (about sh533m) to Ugandans working in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), also known as nkuba kyeyos.

DEATHS

September 30, 2021: KATSIGAZI WAS A PATRIOTIC DIPLOMAT — GOVT. Ambassador Chris Katsigazi, 80, succumbed to cancer of the oesophagus at Nsambya Hospital.
