A total of 7,609,932 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered as of today (Monday, December 6), health ministry figures show.

The number has increased from 6,793,643 COVID-19 doses that had been administered as of Sunday, December 5.

The increasing number of vaccines being administered comes as the government and other stakeholders have intensified sensitisation for vaccine uptake.

Government has also increased the number of public vaccination sites, especially in Kampala city and Wakiso district.

The ultimate solution to overcoming the pandemic is vaccination, and the government is targeting to vaccinate at least 22 million people above 18 years.

During his recent address to the nation on November 20, President Yoweri Museveni called on Ugandans to go for vaccination, saying the country will fully open up by January 2022.

The President, who called for continued adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), directed Resident District Commissioners, Chief Administrative Officers and District Health Officers to mobilise the masses for vaccination, and he warned that those who will fail face dismissal.

“If any vaccine expires in your area, I will deal with you; I will dismiss you,” Museveni earlier warned.

Uganda has received over 10 million vaccine doses of different types. Besides donations, the government has also procured several vaccine doses.

Uganda has mainly received vaccine donations of Sinovac from the People’s Republic of China, AstraZeneca vaccine doses from Norway, Ireland, Belgium, France as well as Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer doses from the US among other countries.

COVID-19 cases

Results of COVID-19 tests done on November 21, 2021, confirmed 34 new cases, bringing the cumulative confirmed cases to now 127,689, health ministry data shows.

Two deaths were recorded, with some 100 patients still admitted to health facilities across the country.

The positivity rate has also since dropped from over 17% in June and July to 0.6% as of today.

“Out of the total of 127,689 cases that have been recorded in the country since the outbreak of the pandemic in March last year, 3,256 patients have died, while 97,627 people have recovered,” the ministry figures indicate.

The new cases per district today are; Wakiso (16), Kampala (12), Kalaki (3), Napak (1), Mbarara (1), and Amuru (1).

The new COVID-19 cases have continued to drop in the country with less than 100 cases reported for most of last month.

For four months now, the number of COVID-19 cases has remained low compared to what the country experienced during the second wave in June and July.

Since the beginning of August, the country has continued to register a low number of new cases and deaths compared to over 500 new cases and over 30 deaths that were being registered daily around June and July.
