The Directorate of Police Fire Prevention and Rescues services in the Uganda Police Force is this Wednesday December 1, 2021 evening battling a huge fire outbreak at the garment factory along Jinja road.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed the fire outbreak and noted the Police Fire Directorate was battling it.

Several police trucks could be seen rushing to Jinja Road Police Station to try and put out the huge flames that had engulfed the factory. Eye witnesses said the fire broke out at around 9:30 pm but by 10:00 pm fire had spread out to almost the entire factory building.

By press time, the cause of fire was not yet known even though sources in police confirmed the fire could have destroyed most of the properties within the factory. This included machinery and materials, as well a property in the stores where sets of completed police uniform are kept.

The police garment factory was constructed with the help of the Chinese firm, China Poly Technology and had the capacity of producing over 300 uniforms per day. It has been producing uniforms for the Uganda Police Force and recently also made uniform for the South Sudan Police Force.

The fire outbreak comes hardly a day after Members of Parliament (MP) expressed concern over delayed police response to fire outbreaks.

Rubaga South MP Aloysius Mukasa, raising on a matter of national importance, said there was continued slow response to fire outbreaks by police.

This follows a fire outbreak in Ndeeba that left plenty of properties destroyed.
