KAMPALA - The former Deputy Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration Makerere University Prof. William Bazeyo has been named among the six Tufts University honorary degree recipients for the Class of 2021.
Bazeyo, a Professor of occupational medicine at the Makerere University School of Public Health (MakSPH) is expected to receive his award via a virtual ceremony scheduled for Sunday May 23, 2021 at 4:00pm East African Time.
The award is in recognition of Prof. Bazeyo’s leadership in research focusing on One Health Innovation and Control of Tobacco use among others.
The award also takes note of his service as former Dean MakSPH as well as chair of several boards including Uganda’s National Research and Innovation Fund under the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation.
The other recipients include; Maria B. Barrett-honorary Doctor of Public Service, Stacey B. Gabriel-honorary Doctor of Science, Hamdi Ulukaya-honorary Doctor of Humane Letters, Ofelia Zepeda-honorary Doctor of Letters, and Bryan Stevenson-honorary Doctor of Laws.
Who is Prof. William Bazeyo?
Prof. William Bazeyo, is Ugandan physician, innovative medical researcher and academic.
He is currently a professor of Occupational Medicine at Makerere University, and has previously served as the university’s deputy vice chancellor and as dean of Makerere University School of Public Health.
He has led research focusing on One Health innovation initiatives across Eastern Africa and supporting government efforts to control tobacco use.
His work has been funded by USAID, the Centers for Disease Control and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, among others.
Bazeyo currently chairs several boards, including Uganda’s National
Research and Innovation Fund and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.
He is a recipient of the Gold Medal, Uganda’s highest civilian honor and is soon to receive an honorary Doctor of Science degree.
