Uganda’s Hima Cement Rwenzori limped to a 22-35 defeat against Kenya’s UAP Kifaru in Nakuru on Saturday, failing to make it to the semi-final of the Bamburi Rugby Super Series tournament.

The result narrowed the tournament down to a Kenyan affair because Uganda’s second franchise Protector Victoria had crashed out in the first place.

Rwenzori started the game well and dominated both territory and possession, managing a 3-0 lead courtesy of an Adrian Kasito penalty in three minutes but Kifaru scrum-half George Mutuku leveled seven minutes later on with a penalty.

Pius Shiundu extended the Kenyans’ lead with a try and Mutuku converted to stretch the lead to 10-3 before the Ugandan ruggers replying in similar fashion through Isaac Tago and (again) Kasito, respectively, to level 10-10.

Rwenzori then broke down, giving Brad Odwako and Dan Othieno a try each with Mutuku converting one to stretch the lead to 22-10 for the hosts, and plunge their opponents even further.

Alvin Othieno and Kevin Bundi added a try each and Paul Muikia was spot on with the penalty to wrap up a convincing victory despite Rwenzori climbing to 22 through a penalty and another try by Ronald Mussajja.

Kifaru coach Charles Ngovi said his side’s triumph was the end product of the ingredients of hard work and good conditioning of his players.

“We were a bit panicky in the first half but the boys regained composure and stayed on our game plan which eventually gave us victory,” he said post-match.

The Uganda franchise is sponsored by Hima Cement, Shell V Power and AON Insurance.
