A company is demanding $141,600 (aboutsh354m) from the National Resistance Movement party (NRM), purporting default on rent payment for party headquarters situated on Plot 10, Kyadondo road in Kampala.

In a suit filed on March 18 at the Commercial Court in Kampala, Nile Travel Agencies Limited, asserts that the party has not paid rent since November 2011 when a tenancy agreement was signed.

The logistics service provider fixed rent at $4000(sh10m) for the facility located in the upscale city suburb of Nakasero.

Through Tumusiime, Kabega and Company Advocates, the company wants court to compel the party to settle the debt, as well as pay 18% value added tax.

“We have suffered inconvenience, and the sum continues to rise every day,” the company laments.

Court documents show that the agreement was for a period of 30 months, until June this year.

Additionally, the company is demanding a 20% interest on the $141,600 from the date of filing the case till full payment. It also want to be awarded general damages for breach of contract.

The court’s assistant registrar Thaddeus Opesen, has signed summons, instructing NRM to file its defence within 15 days from the date of receipt of the court documents.

He has cautioned the party to heed, lest judgment is passed without its input.

The case file has been allocated to Justice Billy Kainamura. A hearing date is yet to be fixed.

Speaking to New Vision Wednesday evening, the deputy party spokesperson Ofwono Opondo said the party would make an appropriate response on the case.

"If they have taken us to court, certainly we will respond," he said.
