The search for the new Kyambogo University Chancellor is on as the last term of the incumbent Dr. Erick Tiyo Adriko comes to an end, after eight years in the position.

The Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act states that the Chancellor of a public university holds office for a period of four years, but is eligible for re-appointment for one more term.

An engineer by training and industrialist by passion, Adriko was formally installed as the Chancellor of Uganda’s second largest public university on February 11, 2005.

Sources at Kyambogo University have told New Vision that the University Council, the institution’s supreme decision making body, today convenes to discuss a replacement for Adriko.

During the council meeting, members are expected to nominate names of three celebrated scholars especially those from Science disciplines. The names will thereafter be forwarded to the President, who appoints the Chancellors of all Public Universities.

As the titular head of Kyambogo, the Chancellor presides at all ceremonial assemblies of the university and confers degrees and other academic tittles and distinctions of the institution.

In the same Council sitting, Acting Vice Chancellor Associate Prof Fabian Nabugomu is expected to hand over the office to the Deputy Vice Chancellor In charge of Academic Affairs Prof Elly Katunguka.

Last month Kyambogo University appointed Prof Katunguka as her Deputy Vice Chancellor (VC) in charge of Academic Affairs, making him the first deputy VC.

According to section 32 of the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act, in the absence of the VC, the first Deputy VC performs the role of the VC.

Before his appointment at Kyambogo, Katunguka was heading the Makerere University Directorate of Research of Graduate Training, formerly the School of Graduate Studies.

Nabugomu will return to his substantive office of Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Finance of Administration.
