UCU drops Peace Proscovia over patriotism

PEACE Proscovia’s participation in Uganda’s Six Nations netball championship outing in Singapore is threatening to end her academic career at Uganda Christian University (UCU).

Proscovia was among the architects in She Cranes’ golden success in December. But that achievement has cost the athlete her academic scholarship.

The Mukono-based campus has reportedly revoked Proscovia’s sports scholarship for a Master’s in Business Administration programme because the trip did not directly benefit the university.

The decision means that Proscovia has to part with sh7m to complete the course or risk losing it.

The sad news was broken to the sporting icon as she went to seek for registration in Mukono yesterday.

“I was shocked to hear that I am no longer on the scholarship list because I went to Singapore in the name of the nation and not the university,” recounted Proscovia, who sounded distraught.

The towering athlete, who helped UCU Lady Canons to the Airtel Basketball League title, missed her end of semester one examinations while in Singapore. 

“Before going to Singapore, the administration gave me an assurance that I would do the papers later,” she said.

On return from Singapore, Proscovia featured for UCU in netball, handball, netball and short put during the Inter- University Games. 

UCU director of student affairs Rev. Milton Tweheyo could not be reached for comment as his phone went unanswered yesterday.
