Sudan 1 Rwanda 0

Uganda 3 Eritrea 0

Emmanuel Okwi returned from a spell on the sidelines to inspire Uganda Cranes to a 3-0 victory over Eritrea in their second Group C match of the GOtv Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi on Monday.

Okwi who missed the team’s first match against Rwanda was in sublime form to score a brace to fire Cranes to the quarterfinals with one match to spare.

Dan Sserunkuma who scored the lone goal that earned the Cranes a 1-0 victory against Rwanda was in top form contributing to the three goals of the match.

Sserunkuma broke through the Eritrea defence before laying a perfect pass for Okwi to score with a close range shot.

Hamis Kizza then made it 2-0 moments later when he converted a penalty awarded after Sserunkuma was brought down in the box.

Okwi sealed Uganda’s win when he netted the third goal to send Eritrea who lost to Sudan in their opening game packing out of the tournament.

Sserunkuma emerged the most valuable player and was awarded a GOtv decoder. He said the honour was an inspiration to him in his bid to take Uganda to greater heights.

Uganda Cranes coach Micho Sredojevic praised the return of Okwi saying his comeback had added punch to the team’s striking force.

“I am happy the team has found the combination it needs to add this year’s title,” he said.

Sudan also secured a place in the last eight when they beat Rwanda 1-0 with Sellah Ibrahim scoring the lone goal of the match to emerge the man-of-the match.

It was the second consecutive victory following their 3-0 thrashing of Eritrea in the first match to send Rwanda who won the title in 1999 packing.

Action returns on to the same venue on Tuesday with Tanzania taking on Burundi while Somalia will battle it out with Chipolopolo of Zambia.

The Cranes wind up their preliminary matches on Thursday when they take on Sudan at Afraha Stadium in Nakuru.
