Most of the youth farming projects perish due to lack of managerial skills and knowledge

Youth who have ventured into farming in Ngora district have called upon government to help them organise study tours where they will be able to visit experienced farmers in different parts of the country.

According to Ben Epeduno the NRM publicity secretary in Kapir Sub County, Ngora district, most of the youth are now eager to venture into farming due to high unemployment rates in the country.

Epeduno said most of the youth who are now farmers are university graduates who pursued arts courses and they have little knowledge about farming.

Stephen Echodu the youth councillor for Ngora town council hailed government's Youth Livelihood Fund initiative where many have benefited.

Speaking to New Vision, Echodu asked government to skill the youth on farming since most of the youth projects are in farming like poultry, piggery and cattle rearing.

He noted that if the youth are skilled through trainings and study tours, they will understand the value of farming and stick to it.

"Changing the mind-set of the youth is very important and it's done practically not theoretically. Let the youth see successful farmers in other areas with their naked eyes" said Echodu.

Lambert Anoku a Ngora district youth councillor urged government to consider trainings a very important issue.

"We would be visiting our fellow youth to guild them, organize seminars and invite experts to train them but we are not facilitated" said Anoku adding that most of the youth farming projects perish due to lack of managerial skills and knowledge in farming.
