Rotary International President, Ian Riseley, has said they are going to establish a memorial fund in the late Sam Owori's honour.

Owori, who was Rotary International president-elect, died unexpectedly at the age of 76 on Friday as a result of post-operative complications from a planned surgery in United States.

He was in August 2016 nominated to head Rotary as president for 2018/2019 and was expected to be installed in Canada in June next year.

Describing him as a special person in so many ways, Riseley noted that Owori's unexpected death was a huge loss to Rotary, his community and the world.

"In addition, we are establishing details on plans to celebrate his life as they become available," he said in the official Rotary International statement.

The statement said Owori's term as Rotary's 108th president would have begun on July 1, 2018.
