He said that in promotions, female officers are given priority

The Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. David Muhoozi has commended spouses of the officers of the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) for supporting them.

Speaking at the ceremony on which 29 newly promoted senior army officers were decorated on Friday, Muhoozi noted that without the support of their spouses, many UPDF officers wouldn't have been what they are today.

The decoration took place at the army headquarters in Mbuya. Muhoozi who was the chief guest was flanked by a number of senior army officers including the commander of the land forces, Peter Elweru.

Muhoozi also explained that the army is gender sensitive. He said that in their promotions, female officers are given priority. But among the 29 officers who were decorated, only Col. Grace Kyomugisha was female.

Also among the 29, one was a major general; six were brigadiers, and 22 colonels.

The Maj. Gen. was John Mugume while brigadiers were Austin Kamanyire, Sam Kakuru, Dominic Twesigomwe, Stephene Tumwesigye Kashure, Richard Otto and Winston Byaruhanga.

Army spokesperson Brig. Richard Karemire appealed to females to apply for jobs in the army whenever there is an opening. He said female Ugandans have also got a role to play in ensuring there is peace in Uganda.
