Uganda's permanent representative to the African Union, Mull Katende, has been appointed chair of the African Union's Peace and Security Council.

Katende takes over from Ambassador Toba Sebade of Togo, who chaired the security council for the month of April.

According to Margret Awino Kafeero, the head of public diplomacy at the ministry of foreign affairs, Sebade handed over to Katende in the Rwandan capital Kigali.

The AU Peace and Security Council (PSC) is holding its 10th retreat in Kigali, where African diplomats are expected to review the implementation of key security decisions on the continent.

"Topics for consideration include an open session on Children and Armed Conflicts in Africa; undertaking a PSC Field Mission to Darfur, Sudan; and adoption of the Monitoring and Evaluation Mechanism for Silencing the Guns in Africa by the year 2020," said Kafeero.

The key responsibility of the PSC is to maintain peace and security on the African continent.

It is also the central body that monitors the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA).
