Uganda's Denise Butungi gets FIDE rating

May 04, 2017

Uganda came second from the bottom at the 2017 U16 Zonal chess championships.

Denise Butuungi has been rewarded with a 1107 rating by the World Chess Federation (FIDE), following her performance at the just concluded Zone 4.2 U-16 Team Chess Championships in Mombasa, Kenya.

Given the general poor display by Team Uganda, the 16-year-old rating was just the perfect consolation to keep the chess fraternity and Uganda hopeful.

"Before the tournament, we hoped for a good performance which we didn't get and this must have depressed our players. However, with Butungi's rating, I believe the players are motivated and more hopeful for a better show in the near future," said the head of Chess Life Academy, Vianney Mukalazi.

"Butungi's rating is actually an eye opener to the Uganda Chess Federation to organize more training for the young players."
