Woman gives birth to child with neuro tube defect

Cranial bifida is a neuro tube defect that develops due to inadequate development of the upper end of the neural tube

A twenty six year old woman is in shock after she produced a baby boy with a rare defect commonly known as Cranial bifida.

Justine Nakitone a mother of two and a resident of Kyamukubirwa Butone village Kibale district had a normal delivery from her mother's residence in Mubende.

She was later rushed to Mubende Regional Referral Hospital with her new-born for special care and later transferred to Mulago hospital.

Cranial bifida is a neuro tube defect that develops due to inadequate development of the upper end of the neural tube.

The baby boy named Brian Asinguze has undergone a brain CT _Scan and X-rays at Mulago hospital

He is now awaiting to undergo an operation at Mulago hospital.

The head of Neuro surgery ward Dr Michael Muhumuza says getting enough folic acid before and during pregnancy can greatly reduce the risk of cranial bifida and other neural tube defects.
