KAMPALA - Government has allocated sh15.9b in the 2017/2018 budget to cater for the LC1  and LC2 elections.

The chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Simon Byabakama, while appearing before parliament's committee on legal and parliamentary affairs, said that it's true government has appropriated the money in the coming financial year's budget.

He said they will announce the date for the polls when they have received the money.

Byabakama also asked the committee to avail sh9.2bn to cater for the elections of district women MPs, district chairpersons to the six new districts of Pakwach, Butebo, Rukiga, Namisindwa, Kyotera and Bunyangabu which he says must be done within 60 days of the commencement of districts from July 1 this year.

Commissioner Stephen Tashobya urged the committee to expeditiously handle the issue of electoral reforms because government had promised to handle that two years before the next elections but a year has passed and the committee is yet to begin its work.
