Police in Kabale has detained a 40-year-old man for selling an Operation Wealth Creation heifer given to his wife.

Vincent Turyingana, a resident of Kibingo Cell, in Kaceerere ward, Ryakarimira Town Council, Ndorwa East Constituency, Kabale district is was arrested on Wednesday for selling a heifer belonging to his wife, Adellah Ahisibwe.

Police arrested him after being alerted by Capt. Edward Twebaze, the Ndorwa East Operation Wealth coordinator.

Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, Elly Maate condemned Turyingana's action of devaluing the heifer which he sold at sh600,000 yet it had been bought at sh1.8m.

"It is unfortunate to find such a man devaluing a government animal and we shall keep investigating this case and once complete he shall be arraigned before courts of law to answer related charges," said Maate.

Twebaze said that the suspect sold the animal in January and when the Operation Wealth Creation team learnt of it, they asked him to replace it but his failure to observe their request prompted his arrest.

"While giving out these animals we warned farmers against selling them but when we learnt of his action we asked him to replace it as soon as possible and he could not abide to our plea thus we could not hesitate to have him arrested after two weeks of patience," said Twebaze.

The suspect however said that he was forced to sell the animal after it had proven to be infertile and was in bad health.

"This heifer had for long failed to get fertilised and I was advised by veterinary doctors to sell it and replace it though I never told the Operation Wealth Creation coordinators," said Turyingana.
