Guide to overcoming fashion blues during pregnancy

Mar 09, 2017

Nothing you wear seems to work. Most of your old clothes do not fit anymore; they are either too small or uncomfortable.

Finding what to wear daily is hard, but what is even harder is finding what to wear when you are pregnant. Your new acquired body shape makes everything difficult. Nothing you wear seems to work. Most of your old clothes do not fit anymore; they are either too small or uncomfortable.

What you need is a bit by bit size readjustment, and here is how you can go about it:

Restyle your old clothes

You can start by going over your old clothes, yeah I am talking about that dress, skirt or blouse you have not been wearing because you thought it was loosely fitting; you intentionally kept it a side with hope of getting it altered to fit, but for some reason you never got down to do it anyway.

The opposite is true too, for those old clothing you altered to fit. Undo the thread lines at the seam line especially if they have extra fabric that was not cut-out during the process of altering. This will work well for you during your first trimester because the baby bump is not that visible, meaning there is not much new belly room needed to cover especially for the first time moms.

You can also look through your old clothing; do you have clothes made out of stretchable fabrics? They could appear tight to the eye, but when you wear them, they feel so comfortable. Such outfits are for keeps; they will happily get you by your first and second trimester before heading out to shop. I am talking about those stretch cottons, silks, velvets, satins, knits and more.

Are you creative, with time on your hands? If so, take your old tight clothing apart, and add a patch of fabric to create extra room. If your stitching hand work is good then you can do it yourself, if you are clueless about stitching fabric together you will need help, hire a good tailor to help bring your desired look to life.

Go Shopping

When you hit the second and third trimester, there is always a need for more room, not even those old stretchable clothing or the altered to fit would work. Your belly will be growing almost every week.

You need new clothes, go shopping, and while you are at it, remember to shop at places where you can try on the outfits before purchase. This will save you from buying something you do not like, too small or too big. Let comfort be your first priority.

Be mindful of fabric, do you have more cold episodes, or heat flashes. If you feel more cold than warm, you need clothes that will add extra warmth to your day like the cottons, jeans, linen, and probably scurf, or shawl. Choose dark shades that keep heat to your body like the blacks, navy blues, army green and more.

If heat flashes get the best of you during the day, you need light fabrics like the lace, chiffon, light cottons, royal silks and any other sheer fabrics.

Include nude colours which reflect heat and light way from your body like the whites, sky blue, lavender and more.
