Public service commission petitions parliament for more funding

Ochan said that due to lack of funds, the commission has failed to effectively carry out their work of supervising district service commissions

The public service commission (PSC) has called on Parliament to push for increased funding for the commission so as to carry out their work effectively.

The call was made by the chairperson of the commission Justice Ralph Ochan, while handing over the commission's annual report to the speaker of parliament Rebeca Kadaga, on Wednesday at Parliament.

Ochan said that due to lack of funds, the commission has failed to effectively carry out their work of supervising district service commissions, creating room for corruption tendencies and fueling corruption in the commission.

To carry out that work effectively, Ochan said they need a bus to help them traverse the country but cannot do that as the cost of hiring cars is too high for the commission.

"We appeal to you madam that the funding should be increased so that it can be commensurate with the work load handled at the commission," said Ochan.

In response, Kadaga promised to write to ministry of finance to find ways of building offices for the commission to cut on the costs of rent and reduce challenges of space.

"A home for the commission would be a deal, I will write to the ministry of finance to see how they deal with it. Land should not be a problem. I think government has a lot of land where a building for commissions could be put up," said Kadaga.

On the issue of outreach, she said it's an issue which should be taken up by the committee concerned and present to parliament for discussion so it can be resolved at once.

"Issue of outreach is important, you can't just sit in Kampala and read files, and you need to meet people. We shall raise the matter through the appropriate committee because transport is key in service delivery," said Kadaga.

She added that they will also revisit the remuneration issue so that what is given to the commission is adequate for them to carry out their work.
