TORORO - A woman and her four children are stranded at Kisoko sub-county headquarters - with nowhere else to go - after her husband married another woman and forced them of their home.

At the headquarters, the barefooted children, looking pale and scruffy, wore tattered clothes as they sat on a verandah next to their mother who cut herself cut a figure of helplessness.

She was breastfeeding one of her children while appearing frustrated, clueless and desperate.

"He just returned home from his work and ordered us out of the house and locked the doors before chasing us away," Sandra Awori told officials at the headquarters.

Her husband, a motorcycle mechanic in Tororo town, is understood to have harshly sent them away after tying the knot with another woman.

After forcing his wife and kids out of home, Raphael Olowo "then returned to town where he has a new woman", according to Awori, a resident of Kisoko central village.

So, what next?

Daisy Amusolo, the community development officer, said they would summon Olowo to see how they can get them reunited since the sub-county does not have any facility to look after the stranded family.

The sub-county chief, Christopher Okengere, decried the rising number of domestic violence cases which he attributes to economic hardship.

He said that on many occasions, women have been beaten for, for instance, returning home late from collecting water or firewood.

"The current water scarcity has forced many women to sleep at swamps in a struggle to collect water due to long queues.

"This has escalated cases of domestic violence as their husbands mistake them for committing adultery."
