Pastor Kiwedde due in court after deportation from Zimbabwe

Pastor William Muwanguzi known as ‘Kiwedde', is to appear in court this afternoon after he was transferred to Rakai Police Station following his repatriation to Uganda. 

Muwanguzi now ‘Prophet Paul Williams' was arrested by Police in Zimbabwe October 29th along his associate Pastor Josephs allegedly entering the country using fake passport and other travel documents. 

Since their arrest, Police in Zimbabwe has been working in collaboration with Uganda's International Police (Interpol) Director, Asan Kasingye. 

Kasingye said he was living as a fugitive in Zimambwe, after escaping from Mutukula Prison in 2014. It is said that he succeeded and went to Zimbabwe through Tanzania. He further added that Muwanguzi will be charged with escape from lawful custody. 

At the time of his arrest, Muwanguzi and his associate had drawn large crowds of people in the water falls area where they duped most of the unsuspecting faithful. 

Gobolo Julius, the District Police Commander (DPC) confirmed having Muwanguzi in custody at Rakai Police Station. 

He explained that he was transferred to Rakai on Wednesday to face the charges. 

Muwanguzi made his way out of Mutukula Prison on 21 September under unclear circumstances. 

At least three prison officers were watching over the some inmates in the sick bay when Muwanguzi escaped. He then took advantage of a security lapse and disappeared mysteriously. 

Frank Baine, the Uganda Prisons Service public relations officer, applauded Interpol for their tireless effort in bringing Muwanguzi back to Uganda. 

He said Muwanguzi made the biggest mistake he will regret for the rest of his life adding that they improved on security and training of prison staff in order to foil other escapes. 

"When inmates escape and eventually re-arrested, they are taken back on a bigger sentence. The period they spend outside after breaking out, is added to the old and the new sentence" he explained. 

Other escapes in the region 

In April 2010, at least one inmate was killed and 10 others injured as they tried to escape from Masaka Government Prison. 

In December 2014, six inmates escaped from Kyanamukaaka Prison as they headed to the prison farm. 

The six inmates were John Ssali, Charles Ssentongo, Peter Mugerwa, Bosco Ssebuna, Mike Kasozi and another 

On March 18th 2013, 10 inmates escaped from Kalisizo Government Prison in Rakai district. 

They were John Mirembe, Wycliffe Mamaggwa, Jacob Kalyango, Abdul Lusiba, Fred Yubu, Bob Vincent Ssemakula, Bosco Ssepuya, Damiano Ssemanda, Moses Mukasa and Vincent Ssenyondo. 

Still in 2013, Muwanguzi attempted to escape from Kalisizo Prison where he had been remanded for impersonating a catholic priest with intent to extort money from residents in Rakai district. He was re-arrested and charged with attempted escape. 

In Lyantonde, eight suspects escaped from Lyantonde Police Cell in the wee hours of the night. Police failed to trace them.
