Flanked by committee members, Rwendeire promised ‘a very comprehensive inquiry.’

Makerere University visitation committee has revealed that the university will remain closed for three months of the inquiry.

Addressing a news conference in Kampala on Tuesday, Dr. Abel Rwendeire the chairperson of the probe committee said that during a meeting with the President on Thursday, the issue of re-opening the university was discussed but the Head of State maintained the university will remain.

"When we met the President on Thursday we proposed that we would carry out this inquiry effectively when the University is open, because we can observe the situation of reality, but since the process of opening is not simple, the President decided the University remain closed," he said.

Dr. Rwendeire said that issues to tackle include but not limited to; financial management, students' affairs, staff affairs, academic affairs as well as reviewing the past visitation committee findings and recommendations.

Flanked by committee members, Rwendeire promised ‘a very comprehensive inquiry.'

"I was there. I understand very well a good number of reasons there. We are going to look at academic affairs, staff affairs. We shall look at the sources of finance and the systems they have to manage these resources of finance," Rwendeire on Tuesday told a news conference in Kampala.

The oldest university in the country was closed earlier this month following a staff strike. Since its closure, there has been a lot of speculation over the institution's re-opening.

According to Rwendeire, the terms of reference did not specify the time frame of the committee, but three months were given.

He said that the committee has already started by reviewing past reports and other relevant literature.
