Lecturers strike: Makerere to hold emergency meeting

Makerere University Council together with the finance planning, administration and investment committee (MUFPIC) will hold a crisis meeting on Friday intended to solve lecturers' demand for their incentive arrears and other financial woes at the institution.

Ritah Namisango, the university spokesperson, told New Vision that the matter of accumulated incentives is before the University Council and that in the upcoming meeting, strategies will be laid to find a solution in a phased approach.

"The respective staff associations will be represented, including the student guild leadership, and I am hopeful of good results," she said.

Namisango also appealed to students to remain calm and read their books as the matters are being handled.

Deus Muhwezi, the spokesperson for Makerere University Academic Staff Association (MUASA), said the situation has not changed and they will not teach until the University Council finds a solution.

"We instituted the strike management committee to oversee and supervise all lecturers to make sure we stick to our resolution," he said.

Meanwhile the situation at the university is calm but no lectures are going on for both day and evening programs as students stranded in lecture rooms.
