Over 120 senior golfers are among a field of about 200 golfers expected to grace the inaugural Seniors Open golf tournament that tees off at Kitante on Saturday.

On Tuesday, the Uganda Seniors Golfing Society received a sh30m cheque as sponsorship for the two-day event. CAA deputy spokesperson Vianney Luggya presented the cheque to Ambrose Akandonda, the Chairman of Uganda Seniors Golfing Society during a press conference at Kitante.

"This year as CAA we are celebrating 25 years of existence and we have lined up several activities to mark the Silver Jubilee celebrations, and this tournament is one of them, as a way of giving back to the communities in which we operate," Luggya said.

"We know that these seniors are frequent users of Entebbe Airport and other services, so we deemed it fit to give back to them and thank them for their loyalty," Luggya added.

Akandonda said the tournament that is open to all senior golfers from around East Africa is aimed at encouraging golfers and others who are not particularly in golf to continue doing sport.

"We believe in remaining active in order to keep fit and for us in the seniors' society we believe with this tournament we will be adding to the lives of the participants. Apart from the open we will continue having other tournaments to keep members active throughout the calendar year but this is the climax of the seniors' tournaments," Akandonda stated.

vice-Chairman competitions Tom Alwala said 33 prizes will be up for grabs in the different categories.

He said apart from the revolving and overall winners' trophies there will be five gross prizes; two for the eighteens and three prizes for the net winners.

The winner of the 80 years and above category will also receive a special prize as well as the longest and nearest to the pin accolades, just like in the ladies category.

UGU vice-captain Faiz Alam and senior golfers Mark Ntege, Nick Okwir and Jolly Karemera graced the press conference.
