Boda-boda cyclists held over theft

After a short ride, Ampeire claimed that his motorcycle had experienced a mechanical problem. He stopped to check what had happened and was joined by Owomugisha and they together attacked Akanyijuka taking away his bag.

Police in Kabale has in detention two boda-boda cyclists over allegations theft. Owen Owomugisha, 18, from Rwakaraba, Northern division, Kabale municipality and Ivan Ampeire, 18 from Bubare Rubanda district are both accused of stealing a bag that contained a laptop, digital camera, passport and UGX 300,000= from James Akanyijuka a resident of Makanga, Central division, Kabale municipality.

According to the Kigezi regional police spokesperson, Elly Maate, Akanyijuka on 4th October, 2016 at 9:00pm, Akanyijuka boarded a motorcycle belonging to Ampeire ,on his way from a bar in town to his home place.

After a short ride, Ampeire claimed that his motorcycle had experienced a mechanical problem. He stopped to check what had happened and was joined by Owomugisha and they together attacked Akanyijuka taking away his bag.

Unfortunately the waitress at the bar where Akanyijuka was picked had identified the registration number of the motorcycle as UEL 9100T and upon reporting about this incident to police, they were able to trace the suspects basing on the motorcycle.

Maate condemns the act urging boda-boda cyclists to desist from acts  of criminality against their clients. "It is unfortunate for boda boda cyclists to steal from their clients. They should desist from that as soon as possible. We shall investigate this case and align them before court to answer the relevant charges," said Maate. A case file CRB 27/81/2016 has been opened in reference to this crime.
