Uganda Olympic Committee has promised to support the national rugby 7s team that won the Rugby Africa 7s tournament last weekend.

UOC president William blick made the commitment at a luncheon with the team in Kampala on Thursday.

"We are going to fully fund the team in the Gold Coast Commonwealth games and also the qualifiers for the 2020 Olympics," Blick told the team.

The Rugby Cranes 7s team defeated Kenya 17-12 in the semi-final and then beat Namibia 38-19 in the final at Safaricom Stadium Kasarani.

"Our support depends on what the Union will give us, but as an Olympic sport we shall put them on the training programme funded by Olympic solidarity," Blick added.

"It is now up to the Union to draw their plan and costs early enough so that we see how we can help them."

URU president Andrew Owor said that they have already strategic plans in place and will be approved by the executive in the next meeting.
