There was glamour and an aura of excitement as hundreds of people gathered for the Miss Tourism Buganda grand finale at Bulange, Mengo on Friday.

At the end of the stiff contest, Margaret Nakaye, 21 from Mawokota County was crowned the 2016/17 Miss Tourism Buganda. She beat five other competitors.

Olivia Nanteza (Bussuju) and Kezia Nakibule (Ssese) were the 1st and 2nd runners up respectively.

Shortly after being crowned, Nakaye said she knew most of questions asked.

"I almost knew every question. I have been in tourism for some good time," Nakaye admitted.

The beauty queen promised to work hand in hand with Buganda Tourism Board to promote tourism.

On her part, Nanteza said the competition was not easy and attributed her success to God.

"I cannot say that I would predict being the first runner up. It's by God's mercy," said Nanteza.

The Nnabagereka Sylvia Nagginda, the guest of honour, hailed the contestants, saying such competitions prove one's confidence and intelligence. She also thanked the Buganda's tourism minister Ritah Namyalo for organising such a successful event.

The state minister for tourism, wildlife and antiquities, Godfrey Kiwanda, said the international event to choose Miss Tourism will take place in Malaysia. He however appealed to the public to improve on the hospitality as a key element in the tourism industry.
