South African envoy donates rugby gear to Gulu schools

He has so far donated balls to the national teams, various clubs and secondary schools

The South African High Commissioner to Uganda, Maj. Gen (Rtd), Lekoa Solly Mollo has donated 52 Rugby balls worth sh3.64m to Gulu Rugby Schools Association.

The association is the union of secondary schools in Gulu that are promoting rugby.

The donation of the balls was held at Pope John Paul II College in Gulu on Monday.

Lekoa said he travelled from Pretoria in South Africa to Uganda to promote rugby and it has strengthened the relationship between the two countries.

He added that he came with 400 rugby balls, but donated some to the national teams (both male and female teams, various clubs and secondary schools as a way of promoting rugby in Uganda.

"I moved to all parts of the country in places like Jinja, Mbale, Kitgum, and Moroto to see that the sport of rugby is developed," he added.

Lekoa advised students to focus on education and sports so that they build relationship among them.

He added that through sports students have healthy bodies that have active minds and innovation that will build the future.

Lekoa said he has seen some potential players in the country, but players need to focus on their dreams and should be committed so that they succeed.

The president of Gulu Rugby Schools Association, Simon Obur said the balls will improve rugby in secondary schools in Gulu.

 

"These donations will make rugby one of the most popular games among people in Gulu and northern Uganda as many students are active, have potential and are involved in playing rugby," he added.
