One of Uganda's longest serving national boxing coaches is dead.

Dick Katende passed on at his home at Naguru Katale Tuesday morning.

Circumstances surrounding his death are still unclear. According to East Coast Boxing coach Hassan Khalil Katende could have slipped and hit his head down while returning from a short call late into the night.

Khalil said Katende's wife, who had been watching television with her husband, found the deceased lying in blood at 3am.

"He bled profusely," said Khalil, who was a team-mate of the deceased in Kampala Boxing Club.

Katende, a former national middleweight champion, took over from Cuban Jimenez Lazaros as national coach in 1992. He served for over a decade.

He was re-appointed in 2013 and the following led the national team to the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Police at 5am took the body to Mulago hospital for post mortem. Burial arrangements will be announced.
