Former Bishop of Kabale Robert Gay passes away

Bishop Gay was appointed Apostolic Administrator of Kabale Diocese on 15th July 1994

The retired Kabale Bishop Robert Gay passed away at his home area of Sherbrook, Lennoxville in Canada, in aged 89, the Uganda Episcopal Conference has announced.

 

"It is with sadness that we announce the demise of the Rt. Rev. Robert Marie Gay, Bishop Emeritus of Kabale. He passed on yesterday (June 29, 2016) at midday in Canada," a statement issued by the Episcopal conference on Thursday evening stated.

Bishop Gay was appointed Apostolic Administrator of Kabale Diocese on 15th July 1994 after the retirement of Bishop Barnabas R. Halem'Imana.

On 22nd January 1996, Gay was appointed Bishop of Kabale and on 9th March 1996 was ordained Bishop. He retired on 8th June 2003.

 

Since his retirement, he was assisting the priests in Uganda for renewal courses and retreats at St. Augustine's Institute, Nsambya in Kampala until he returned to his home country in Canada where he breathed his last, the statement said.

Bishop Gay was born in Ottawa, Canada on 22nd January 1927. On 31st January 1954 he was ordained a priest of the Congregation of the Missionaries of Africa.

He served as Superior General of the Missionaries of Africa (White Fathers) from 1980 to 1986.
