'PWDs highly contribute to the development of communities and therefore need to be supported.'

The Bishop of Jinja diocese, Charles Martin Wamika, has appealed to christians to support persons with disabilities in order to enable them attain a better future.

He said that in some communities, persons with disabilities are still discriminated against and are denied access to services such as education and health.

"Most parents, when they give birth to children with disabilities, they keep them in indoors and also deny them their rights," Wamika said.

Wamika was speaking during the confirmation of 801 christians at St. Matia Mulumba church in Kyebando parish in Mayuge district on Sunday.

During the mass, a total of 61 people were also converted to Catholic faith.

"It is absurd that Persons with Disabilities are still marginalized and ill treated in communities. Let us as Christians, fight such vices in order to transform their lives,@ Wamika said.

He said that PWDs highly contribute to the development of communities and therefore need to be supported.

"In this year of divine mercy, as church, we are advocating for better education, health and other rights for persons with disabilities. The PWDs are God's people and they also contribute to the development of communities,'' Wamika said. He called upon Christians to show love and compassion to them.
