Uganda protests to DRC over slain policemen

The Government of Uganda has protested the murder on Saturday of four policemen by killed by Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) armed forces, Forces Armees de la Republique Democratique du Congo (FARDC).

Sergeant Faruk Waiswa, Corporal Biral Obara and Constables Moses Ochen and Bernard Insingoma while patrolling Lake Albert waters in Kibale district were shot and killed at Kitebere Island.

The assailants also carried away the bodies and grabbed property of the deceased including their boat.

Describing the crime as "heinous", Henry Okello Oryem, the State minister for Foreign Affairs, said government has since delivered a protest note to the officials of the DRC embassy in Kampala with several demands.

During the press conference at the ministry headquarters, Oryem who said the murder of Ugandan cops was "unfortunate" said Uganda's demands include; a detailed report on the circumstances that led to the killing of the four policemen, immediate repatriation of the bodies, equipment and all personal belongings of the victims, compensation of the bereaved families and FARDC soldiers who murdered Ugandan soldiers be brought to book.

An immediate joint implementation of the Ngurdoto Agreement and the outcome of the August 2014 joint permanent commission between DRC and Uganda is the other demand that Uganda has tabled before DRC.

The press conference on Monday afternoon was attend by the Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary Ambassador James Mugume, Gen. Kale Kayihura, the Inspector General of Police and Brig. Geoffrey Taban, the military attaché at Ugandan embassy in DR Congo.
