Makerere University professor Stella Nyanzi has become the talk of Uganda after vehemently protesting her eviction by a one Mahmood Mamdhani, the Executive Director of Makerere University Institute of Social Research.
She undressed in defiance and shared the pictures on social networking site facebook. Her actions are not only contrary to the law but also contravene the highly valued cultural norms.
The anti-pornography act outlaws the publication of any material or behavior that corrupts public morals. Ugandans must condemn her actions in the strongest terms possible.
She even hurled insults, including use of "F" words. For this to come out of the mouth of a professor, mother and senior citizen is utterly absurd and shameful. State Minister for Ethics and Integrity Fr. Simon Lokodo condemned her actions and said police would arrest her. I hope he will not be cowed by threats from her supporters.
The long arm of the law must catch up with her. I understand Makerere University has a code of conduct for its staff. It will surprise me if such behavior goes unpunished by one of Africa's prime learning Institutions.
A misunderstanding of that nature could be effectively handled internally. The likes of Nyanzi are going to impart a very dangerous mindset in our young ones. The human body is a holy being which should be respected.
In the wake of this threat from such high handed activists, parents must reconsider the manner in which they bring up their children especially girls. It is critical that they instill in them values that will make them honor their bodies.
