Lyantonde - Officers at Lyantonde police headquarters have no places of convenience after the one toilet they were sharing with inmates got filled up.

The police station which has a population of more than 100 officers together with their families and inmates has been sharing one toilet which got full and was closed by the District Health Inspector.

According to Erias Kalasokye, the District Health Inspector, inmates, residents and police officers' health is at stake saying diseases such as cholera and typhoid may easily break out especially during this rainy season.

He added that he ordered the closer of the current toilet after giving the senior officers in charge of the station over three months grace period to build another latrine but all in vain.

Presently, officers and their families seek permission from the neighboring residences to use their toilets while others use the ones at Lyantonde Town Council.

A police constable, who preferred to speak on condition of anonymity, said it is common to find littered human waste around the barracks.

Another female police officer added that at night some police officers and constables use nearby garbage site to dispose human waste.

"It is true that some families in the barracks use buckets which they empty at the garbage site near the police," she explained.

Ibin Ssenkumbi, the Regional Police Spokesperson, said he's aware of the problem adding that they are working around the clock to improve on the officers' standard of leaving
