Prayer will liberate Uganda - Besigye

Apr 12, 2016

Forum for Democratic Change supporters have held their Tuesday prayers at the party headquarters at Najjanakumbi in Kampala.

"I thank God, because He is truly the Almighty. I believe it is God that I am here today with you," these were the first words, the former Forum for Democratic Change presidential flag bearer, Col Dr. Kizza Besigye said when he was given a microphone to speak at the party's weekly prayers.

This is the first time for Besigye to attend the prayers which were initiated by his party since elections ended on February 18.

Besigye thanked people for praying for him to be set free.

"I urge all people and parties to participate in the prayers to liberate the country. This is not a joke, I invite all parties and all people to come next week and we pray. With God we won't fail," he said.

Besigye explained that prayers are better than any other weapon in fighting for justice.

"Others are saying we should use other aggressive means to fight for justice. They say praying is just wasting time, but it is not because the testimony is here right before you," he added.

He said; "Our God defies injustice. He is a God of justice and stands with those who seek justice. It is God who helped us win the liberation war of 1981-1986. Let no body deceive you".

Besigye said their struggle is not looking for leader but aiming at freeing the country to everyone; "to share equitably in the fortunes of our land. Not this situation where people wake up not knowing whether they will eat or not".

He said they are fighting to have the country back in the citizens' hands, where they can change leaders and also hold them accountable.

"This is not a battle of FDC but a struggle for liberation. We can also take these prayers to other parties' headquarters and other areas to pray for the nation," he said.

Last week, FDC spokesperson, Ibrahin Semujju said they were planning to take extend the prayers to taxi and bodaboda stages among other areas.

The main preacher, Pastor David Ngabo prayed for Besigye to be guided by God and bless his feet to reach the highest place like David from a shepherd to a King.

He asked people to be strong and fight for the truth.

The party's national chairman, Wasswa Birigwa, said the truth sets free, saying that it is the same reason why FDC people are walking happily without fear.

The prayers were attended by Maj Gen. Mugisha Muntu (FDC party president), Maj Rwaboni Okwir (brother to later Brig. Nobel Mayombo) and Erias Lukwago among other people.
