Bombers captain out of squad

Uganda Boxing Federation named a team of 10 boxers for the qualifiers due in Cameroon this month March 19-20.

The Bombers captain Rogers Semitala is out of the national boxing squad that was named for the Africa Olympic qualifiers campaign on Tuesday.

The bantam weight was ruled out after he aggravated a nagging knuckle injury on his right hand in explosive last trials at Lugogo on Monday against Atanus Mugerwa in the.

The team includes Sweden-based All Africa bronze medalist Kenneth Katende (light heavyweight).

The technical team is however, still weighing whether to take on Sweden-based Ronald Serugo in the flyweight category.

After losing hopes of having a shot at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Semitala announced the end of his reign in the national team.

"This is my last moment in the national team. I am now joining professional ranks," said the COBAP Boxing Club pugilist after the bout.

Umar Gayita (light flyweight), Marvin Omondi (flyweight) and Muzamiru Kakande are new boxers on the squad.

Full squad: Umar Mutebi (light flyweight), Marvin Omondi/Ronald Serugo (fly), Atanus Mugerwa (bantam), Suleiman Segawa (lightweight) and Tony Tonny Mukiibi (light welter).

Others are Muzamiru Kakande (welterweight), Reagan Ssibwa (middleweight), Kenneth Katende (light heavyweight), Willy Kyakonye (heavyweight) and Mike Sekabembe (super heavyweight).
