Ugandans turned out in force to cast their vote in the presidential and parliamentary polls that opened on Thursday.
At Ntinda New Market in Nakawa Division, voting started more than an hour late at 8:20am. Although the materials had arrived at the polling station at about 7:30am, impatient voters were told that polling officials cited a hiccup with the biometric voter identification machines.
The exercise was smooth as long queues of voters braved the searing heat to cast their ballot.
At Kisaasi Quran Primary School in Kyanja, voting started at 8:30am due to a delay in arrival of polling materials. A few of the voters who were at the polling station by 7:30am left before voting begun.
Invalid votes
At Ntinda New Market, it was evident that several ballots would be invalidated after polling officials noted that voters were folding the ballots the wrong way before placing them into the ballot box.
While the ballots are supposed be folded vertically, many voters were folding them horizontally, raising the risk of ink spilling on boxes of other candidates.
