Security tight ahead of polls

Security has revealed that the intensified deployment in Kampala and surrounding areas is aimed at curbing violence ahead of the February 18 presidential and parliamentary elections.

A military officer told New Vision that: "We want to show people that we are around and we are keeping peace."

The police's Political and Electoral chief, Susanne Kasingye, tasked the public to report any electoral offences on a police toll free line 0800100912.

"They are emergency security units set up to neutralise election related offences," she said.

Addressing the press conference on Monday, Police spokesperson, Fred Enanga said a total of 149,000 police officers will be deployed in the coming national elections, to ensure law and order for a peaceful exercise.

The officers will be deployed at and around the 28,010 polling stations country wide.

"Police have devised a comprehensive security plan for the fourth coming general elections to maintain law and order, ensure transparent elections, and smooth polling exercise," Enanga said.
