Army reassures public on peace and security

As the country marks Tarehe Sita Day today, the Uganda Peoples Defense Forces (UPDF) has reiterated its commitment in ensuring peace and security of people and property of the West Nile region in particular and the country in general.

Capt. Ateenyi Kataangwa, the 409th Brigade political commissar gave the assurance ahead of the commemoration of the Army Day popularly known as the Tarehe Sita in Kiswahili.

Tarehe Sita day is being marked today and national celebrations are underway at Kololo Independence Grounds in Kampala.

President Museveni is putting off his election campaign to attend the celebrations. February 6, is the day the National Resistance Army launched its five-year guerrilla war in 1981 after the 1980 elections widely believed to have been rigged in favour of Milton Obote's UPC party.   

The day is preceded by an army week during which the military carries out charity work for the public in a bid to build trust in the institution.
