The Electoral Commission (EC) has today received the first consignment of ballot papers for presidential and parliamentary elections at Entebbe international airport.
Addressing journalists shortly after the arrival of the consignment, EC chairman Badru Kiggundu said that the 16 million ballot papers have been flown in by Paarl Media, a South African based printing company that was procured to print presidential, parliamentary and district women councilor's ballot papers.
He said that the consignment will be transported from Entebbe by courier service company to the EC warehouse in Banda, Kireka town council, Wakiso district.
"We shall keep them under very tight security provided by the Uganda Police Force at our warehouse up to the time of dispatch to various districts," Kiggundu said.
He said that presidential candidates and interested stakeholders can assign agents to camp at the warehouse for purposes of security, after accreditation.
"Accredited agents will be allowed at the warehouse for the remaining two weeks but we appeal to presidential candidates and political parties to fully facilitate these agents," Kiggundu said.
The other consignments of ballot papers from TALL Security Print Limited of UK, Al Ghurair Printing and Publishing House from United Arab Emirates and Picfare industries Uganda will be delivered in due course.
According to Kiggundu, the entire printing exercise of ballot papers has cost sh45b. The presidential and parliamentary elections will be held on February 18th.
