Australian Olympian Eloise Wellings has hailed the Achon Marathon as a good basis of nurturing budding up-country athletics talent in Uganda.

Australian Olympian Eloise Wellings has hailed the Achon Marathon as a good basis of nurturing budding up-country athletics talent in Uganda.


Wellings who is on her second visit to Uganda says she was greatly excited by the annual community run in Otuke last Sunday.

“This is a great event. It is very exciting to see members of the community involved in athletics.

It excites me to see kids running. Sport has the potential to enable kids achieve big dreams. This is important because sport has an integral role in development as a whole,” observed Wellings.

The annual meet organized by former Olympian Julius Acon drawn interest in the Lango sub-region. This year’s event drew over 2000 spectators. The former US-based athlete is contesting as an MP in the area.

Top performers in the event earned prizes including mattresses, bed sheets and blankets at Adwar Primary School ground.

The annual event is supported by US-based sports kit manufacturing giant Nike as a means of inspiring disadvantaged athletes in the area ravaged by LRA rebellion. Nike offered T-shirts to participants.

Okwang and Ogor sub-county dominated the event.
