Individuals seeking employment in government will be subject to performance targets and appraisal to regularly assess their contribution to the economy, the Vice President, Edward Ssekandi has said.

The Vice President announced on Monday the new measure was intended to ensure that public servants take an active role in the implementation of government programmes.

Ssekandi made the disclosure at the opening of the 6th annual retreat of cabinet ministers, permanent secretaries and local and district leaders to review performance of service delivery in government.

The two-day retreat will assess the performance of ministries, departments, agencies and local authorities in implementing programs and projects.

The Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda said the retreat, held at the President's Office Conference Hall in Kampala, will review progress, identify and address bottlenecks to service delivery in Uganda.

It is the sixth cabinet retreat and for the first time ambassadors and heads of missions are in attendance.
