Uganda professional golfers have another opportunity to make an extra buck when they compete in the Pepsi Independence Day Golf Tournament at Palm Valley and Country Club on Thursday.

The professionals will be among more than 120 amateur golfers who have registered to compete on Friday in the 4th edition of the event.

Vincent Byamukama who won last year's event will lead the charge in the one-day; 36 hole, sh10m contest alongside local club professional Fred Wanzala. Denis Anguyo, Herman Mutaawe, Godfrey Mande and George Olayo who finished among the top five last year will also feature.

Davis Kashaka who won the amateur event is also ready to defend his crown.

Addressing a press conference during the launch of the tournament at Sheraton Hotel yesterday, alongside Mukwano Public Relations and Liaison officer Douglas Mazune, Crown Beverages Customer Marketing Manager Jeff Ssekandi said Pepsi had committed sh150m for the event.

This will go towards course preparations, prizes, refreshments and players' kit among other logistics to ensure the players enjoy every moment they will spend on the course.

"We have so far received 120 entries; as Pepsi we have taken it upon ourselves to promote the sport on national and international level through training sponsorships like we gave Flavia Namakula, Brenda Ngabo and Angel Eaton,"

"Together with other sponsors we hope to grow the sport among Ugandans and see our golfers compete at global level to fly our flag high; I wish all the players all the best of luck," Ssekandi said

"We are happy to mark Uganda's Independence anniversary with this competition and as usual we are happy to be associated with this top notch event," Mazune stated
