MITYANA - The police are investigating a house fire in which four children were killed in a village in Mityana district.

The fire, according to police reports, started at around 8pm local time on Sunday. The victims had been left alone in the house at the time.

District police commander Henry Kintu said the parents had left the house to go purchase some items.

“The parents had gone to the nearby trading center to buy some household items. As they returned, they realized the house was already burning.”

Police say the fire started from outside the house but ongoing investigations will help arrive at the actual cause of the inferno.

The burnt house is of the two structures in the same compound, the residence of Robert Sserwadda and his sister Nalongo Yozefina Nalwadda.

The children were aged between five and 11 years. Two of them were Nalwadda’s daughters.

The incident happened at Luwonvu village, located in Ssekanyonyi sub-county.

Residents say the affected families were good people and lived peacefully with their neigbours.

On her part, the grieving Nalwadda said she had not left any fire sort of fire inside the house and no candle was lit either.

“I had gone to buy paraffin for the lantern and salt. The children only had a small torch. That means that the person who lit the fire came from outside,” she sobbed.

Police transferred the charred bodies to Mityana hospital mortuary for examination.

The family had arranged the burial for today (Tuesday) in the same village, with one of the four scheduled for interment in Bushenyi district on Wednesday.
