RAKAI - Another man said to be one the people masterminding unexplained killings in Greater Masaka Region was on Friday remanded to Masaka Government Prison.

Asuman Muddu, a resident of Binyobirya village in Bukomansimbi district turned himself in to Masaka Police station in May to confess his crimes.

In an unprecedented occurance, the remorseful Muddu was charged with murder, attempted murder and aggravated robbery after he confessed to being a participant in more than 100 killings in Rakai, Masaka, Lyantonde, Lwengo and Bukomansimbi.

Muddu was brought to Masaka Magistrates Court on Friday but his file was pushed to July 18, 2014.

In a session that took place in the chambers, the Chief Magistrate Hood Matovu postponed the case on grounds that the state prosecutor was absent.

It’s believed that Muddu and others participated in a series of murders including that of Pastor Steven Mugambe of Kyebe Pentecostal Church and eight members of his family.

The most grisly incident in the Southern Region that gripped the nation occurred in Rakai district on January 14, 2013.

Unknown assailants, in the dead of the night, gained entry into the house of Pastor Steven Mugambe at Kanabulemu village in Kyebe Sub County after they drilled a hole and slaughtered him and other family members.

Several security organs embarked on a crisis operation to investigate the increased killings in Rakai which were initially attributed to land wrangles.

Shortly after Muddu surrendered to police, detectives got some clues that led to a big break into the case.

Taban Chiriga, the District CID said they are still investigating all those implicated in the said killings in Rakai district. He explained that they are to bring to book everyone linked to the unexplained murders.
