Vivo Energy, the company that distributes and markets Shell branded fuels and lubricants in 16 African countries, held its annual Safety Day today to focus on Safety in their operations.

Vivo Energy employees and contractors reflected and focused on risks that they are exposed to on a daily basis, best practice from across the group and improvements that can be made to further strengthen Vivo Energy’s industry-leading safety performance.

This was under the theme of “Safety is in our hands. Drive it at Home, At Work and On the Road”.

“Our commitment to HSSE is fundamental, enduring and non-negotiable and is the starting point for everything that we do: in our operations and the communities in which we operate and with all our customers and suppliers” said Christian Chammas, CEO Vivo Energy.

“Our performance to date has been positive, with key metrics showing that we have met or exceeded our tough targets in vital areas,” he added.

In 2013 Vivo Energy delivered industry leading safety performance across the 16 countries in which it operates in Africa with a TRCF ( total recordable case frequency) of 0.35 and an LTIF ( lost time injury frequency) of 0.25.

In Uganda, Vivo Energy employees visited and conducted site safety discussions at selected Shell Service Stations to engage the station employees to help them appreciate better the safety measures at each station that require attention in their day to day operations.

Safety is an integral part of the daily operations at all fuel stations and by all Vivo Energy transporters and employees and must be taken very seriously to guarantee that there is no occurrence of accidents.

The employees also handed out road safety tips to customers who were fuelling at the station, and the general public to encourage them to behave responsibility on the road.

Wherever Vivo Energy operates in Africa, even in the most challenging environments, the company’s goal is to lead by example and set a new benchmark for world-class Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) policies and practices. Being the best in HSSE is not an objective that sits apart from Vivo Energy’s overall ambitions.  It is an integral and essential part of the business.

"Safety is a way of life at Vivo Energy and defines the way we work. It is both a discipline and a personal commitment by all of us to do business responsibly without harming people, our assets and the environment. This is why we take time off every year to stop and just focus on safety to appreciate why we do business the way we do. Safety is both a personal and corporate responsibility. This is why we have individual participation on our Safety Day. Everyone sees how they fit in the picture" stated Hans Paulsen, Managing Director, Vivo Energy Uganda.

"At a corporate level, our duty is to provide safe working conditions and implement safe work practices that protect our employees and contractors in their day to day busines," he added.
